I loved this novella, my only wish is that I could have had just a tad bit more!
Vanessa and Shane we're high school sweethearts. They married young while in college and life was supposed to be good, but sadly things and Shane changed quickly. Over the past four years Vanessa has lived through Shane's multiple affairs, and suffered his daily tongue lashings where he made her feel like she was below him in every way, and completely and utterly worthless. Now only months away from her divorce being finalized the last thing this fifth grade teacher expected was to literately be plowed down by Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome.
" Running had always been my safe place. When life was too much, I would go for a run. I looked to my left... as something knocked into my back. My legs gave way and I sprawled onto the sidewalk, rolling to the grass face down. I stayed frozen, not really sure what had just happened"
Jackson Berrios is an NBA superstar. Most people recognize him wherever he goes and the paparazzi have captured him with his fair share of starlets and models. So when he runs into Vanessa and realizes that she doesn't recognize him after apologizing profusely of course, he can't help but ask her to lunch...and play the I'm new in town card.
"Have lunch with me?"
"You really don't need to buy me lunch. I'm okay"
"I know I don't have to. This has nothing to do with me running into you. I'd just like to have lunch with someone. Remember I'm new in town?"
Yes Vanessa eventually recognizes him and although they do share a instant attraction, she's been burned too many times and well Jackson isn't like Shane at all...No he's just last seasons lead NBA scorer, hot as hell and has thousands of woman fawning over him. Needless to say she isn't afraid to share with him where this relationship is not going and all the reasons why.
"I had never been with a guy that hadn't cheated on me and I was sure this guy was just like the others. I attracted them which is why I was giving up ever dating again"
Will Jackson respect her wishes and stay away or will he try and break down the walls put there by Shane and show Vanessa that she's not only worthy of love but that she's a remarkable person inside and out.
Guarded is a well written and fast paced novella about facing your fears, learning to trust and the value of love. It's told in dual POV's, has a cast of extremely likable characters, a good plot and a storyline that flowed seamlessly from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and guarantee you will too.
